Designing the Perfect Custom Bolt Action

Have you ever wondered what goes into designing a new custom action? On the surface, a bolt action seems pretty simple with its manual operation and relatively few parts. So what makes one action feel smooth while another binds, why will some have a heavy or light bolt lift, and why can you use a pre-fit barrel on one and not another?
